For most women, the sacroiliac joint is where the pain often originates. This is where the pelvis attaches to the spine. Pregnancy back pain may begin as stiffness in the morning and then progress to soreness through the day.

Causes of Back Pain during Pregnancy

Back pain during pregnancy is one of those pregnancy problems that can affect the majority of child-bearing women because of the following causes:

Changes in posture, fetal growth and movement

Your uterus expands as your fetus grows and this shifts your center of gravity as it stretches out and weakens your abdominal muscles. This is a week by week pregnancy event that changes your posture and movement, eventually putting a strain on your back.

Weight gain:
Women normally gain 25 and 35 pounds of weight during a healthy pregnancy. This pregnancy weight gain is then supported by the spine, which can cause a discomfort in your lower back. Hormonal changes:

This can cause ligaments that hold up the spine to loosen up a bit, which can lead to instability and back pain during pregnancy.

This is one of pregnancy problems that can make you feel less stable as it causes pain when you walk, stand, and sit for long periods, bend, or even lift things. In short, this makes moving a problem.

Muscle separation:

Another cause of back pain during pregnancy is the fact that as your uterus expands; two corresponding sheets of muscles called “rectal abdominis” may split along the center layer. This may worsen pregnancy back pain.

Stress :

Emotional stress can be the source of muscle tension in the back, which may be reflected as pregnancy back pain. You may find that you experience an increase in back pain during pregnancy when stress is great.
